183-day calculator

Add your trips and see how many days you spent in each country in a calendar year or in any 12 months.

Not tax advice. Tax residency rules vary by country: the 183-day test is only one of them, the way days are counted differs, and you can be resident with fewer days. Ask a tax adviser before you rely on these numbers.

Trips

How the counter works

Each trip covers every day from arrival to departure, both included. A day on which you travel between two countries counts for both, and overlapping trips to the same country count each day once. Days outside the period you choose are left out.

A country reaching 183 days is marked, because that is a common threshold. It is a flag to look closer, not a conclusion.

Why this is not the whole answer

  • Countries define a day of presence differently: any part of a day, a night spent there, or presence at midnight.
  • The period can be the calendar year, a tax year with different dates, or any 12 months.
  • A home, family or the centre of your economic life can make you resident with far fewer days.
  • Tax treaties have their own tie-breaker rules when two countries both see you as resident.

Frequently asked questions

Is spending fewer than 183 days in a country enough to avoid tax residency there?

Not necessarily. The 183-day test is only one rule. Many countries also treat you as resident if you have a home there, your family lives there or your economic interests are centred there, and some use lower day counts. This counter only adds up days; it cannot tell you where you are resident.

Does a travel day count for both countries?

Here, yes: a day on which you leave one country and arrive in another counts for both. Many tax authorities count any part of a day as a day of presence, but some do not count arrival or departure days, or count only days on which you are present at midnight. Check the rule of the country concerned.

Calendar year or rolling 12 months?

It depends on the country. Some count days in the calendar year, others in their own tax year, and some, as tax treaties often do, in any 12-month period. The counter supports a calendar year and the 12 months ending on a date you choose.

Are my trips saved or sent anywhere?

They stay in this browser only (local storage). Nothing is sent to Bordr.

This counter is not tax or legal advice. Confirm the rules with the tax authority of each country or a qualified adviser.
