What it means in practice
The officer at the border decides how long you may stay in Uruguay; the date in your passport stamp is the one that counts. Ask for the days you need and carry proof of onward travel.
How Uruguay counts your stay: Tourists may stay up to 90 days from entry.
At the border
Official details are shown in English.
- Passport valid for at least 6 months after arrival
How to avoid overstaying
- Go by your stamp or visa. The date the officer gives you is the one that counts, even if it is shorter than the maximum.
- Extend before you run out. Apply in person at the Dirección Nacional de Migración (Montevideo office: Misiones 1513) with your valid passport, at least 15 calendar days before your permitted stay ends. Fee: 225.60 UI (indexed units) while the stay is still valid, 345.00 UI if it has already expired; the amount in pesos follows the current UI value.
- Penalties. Our data does not list the overstay penalty for Uruguay. Ask the immigration authority before you risk it: fines, deportation and entry bans are common elsewhere.
Staying longer
Visa-free days are for visits. For months or years in Uruguay, these are the long-stay routes in Bordr's guide (checked against official sources):
Official details are shown in English.
- Digital nomad provisional ID (Hoja de Identidad Provisoria) — Up to 180 days, renewable once for another 180 days (about one year in total)
- Legal permanent residence (Residencia Legal Permanente) — Permanent; lost only after 3 years living outside Uruguay
- Legal temporary residence (Residencia Legal Temporaria) — From 180 days up to 2 years; extension must be requested within 90 days before expiry
Costs, income thresholds and how to apply are in the Bordr guide.
