What it means in practice
180 days is about six months. If you arrive on 1 November 2026, your last legal day is 29 April 2027, because the arrival day is day one. Use the stay calculator for your own dates.
That is long enough to rent a place for a season, but a visitor stay is not residence: it does not give you the right to work for a local employer.
How Costa Rica counts your stay: Stay is counted from the entry date and limited to the days stamped by the officer. Overstaying can lead to deportation and a re-entry ban of several years.
Before you go
Official details are shown in English.
- Ticket out of Costa Rica — Before departure; airlines check it at check-in; Price of the ticket. Needed if you arrive on a one-way ticket, if your return is more than 90 days after arrival, or if you leave from a different country than you flew in from. Accepted: a pre-purchased flight or bus ticket out of the country, or proof of passage on a cruise ship. Official site
- Proof of funds — Have it ready on arrival; At least USD 100 per month or part of a month of stay. Officers may ask for bank statements, cash or a credit card covering your stay. Official site
At the border
Official details are shown in English.
- Machine-readable passport valid for the whole stay (visa groups: at least 180 days)
- Return or onward ticket and proof of at least USD 100 per month of stay
- Make sure you get an entry stamp; the number of days granted is written on it
- Yellow fever vaccination certificate if arriving from a country with yellow fever risk
How to avoid overstaying
- Go by your stamp or visa. The date the officer gives you is the one that counts, even if it is shorter than the maximum.
- Plan to leave a day or two early. With 180 days, book your exit before the last legal day so a cancelled flight doesn't push you over.
- Extend before you run out. First-group 180-day stays cannot be extended. Visa holders granted 30 days can apply to the DGME for an extension up to 90 days. For longer stays apply for residence or the digital nomad (Rentistas/Nómadas Digitales) status.
- What overstaying costs. Overstaying can lead to deportation and a re-entry ban of several years.
