What it means in practice

90 days is about three months. If you arrive on 1 November 2026, your last legal day is 29 January 2027, because the arrival day is day one. Use the stay calculator for your own dates.

How Tanzania counts your stay: Visitors receive a Visitor's Pass of up to 3 months. With a multiple-entry visa each stay is limited to 90 days in a row.

Before you go

Official details are shown in English.

  • Visa on arrival — Cost: Same visa fees: USD 50 ordinary, USD 100 multiple entry (US citizens); Processing: Issued at official entry points; Validity: As for the corresponding visa type; Stay: Up to 90 days. Apply on the official site
  • Tanzania e-visa — At least 10 days before travel; at least 2 months for referral-category nationals; Ordinary (single-entry) visa USD 50; US citizens: multiple-entry visa USD 100. Paid online by Visa or Mastercard, non-refundable. One visa covers both the mainland and Zanzibar: pick your first destination in the form. Every traveller, including children, needs a separate application. Upload a colour photo (JPG, up to 500 KB), the passport data page and a return ticket. Wait for the Visa Grant Notice by e-mail (or download it via the status check) before flying; if you arrive before approval you may have to pay the visa fee again at the border. Applications cannot be changed after submission. Use only the official portal. Official site
  • Zanzibar inbound travel insurance — Before travelling to Zanzibar; Set by the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation. Since 1 October 2024 all foreigners (except residents) entering Zanzibar through its seaport or airport must hold Inbound Travel Insurance bought only from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation. It covers the stay of up to 92 days, including evacuation and repatriation. Other insurance policies do not replace it. Without it entry can be refused. Only needed if your trip includes Zanzibar. Official site
  • Yellow fever certificate (only when coming from a risk country) (optional) — Before travel; Cost of vaccination in your country. Required for travellers aged 1 year and over arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever transmission, including airport transits or layovers longer than 12 hours in such a country. Not required when flying in directly from countries without risk (e.g. from the United States). Official site

At the border

Official details are shown in English.

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months with at least one blank visa page
  • Return ticket must be shown on arrival
  • Visa Grant Notice (printed or on your phone); the final decision on entry is made by the immigration officer
  • Zanzibar: proof of Zanzibar Insurance Corporation inbound travel insurance
  • Yellow fever certificate if arriving from a risk country or after a transit of more than 12 hours there

How to avoid overstaying

  • Go by your stamp or visa. The date the officer gives you is the one that counts, even if it is shorter than the maximum.
  • Plan to leave a day or two early. With 90 days, book your exit before the last legal day so a cancelled flight doesn't push you over.
  • Extensions. Our data has no extension route for Tanzania; plan to leave on time or arrange a different visa in advance.
  • Penalties. Our data does not list the overstay penalty for Tanzania. Ask the immigration authority before you risk it: fines, deportation and entry bans are common elsewhere.
