What it means in practice

60 days is about two months. If you arrive on 1 November 2026, your last legal day is 30 December 2026, because the arrival day is day one. Use the stay calculator for your own dates.

How Sri Lanka counts your stay: 30 days from the date of first arrival, with a double-entry facility within that period (the second entry gets only the remaining days).

At the border

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival
  • Confirmed return ticket
  • Sufficient funds for the stay
  • Copy of the ETA approval (recommended)

How to avoid overstaying

  • Go by your stamp or visa. The date the officer gives you is the one that counts, even if it is shorter than the maximum.
  • Plan to leave a day or two early. With 60 days, book your exit before the last legal day so a cancelled flight doesn't push you over.
  • Extend before you run out. Apply after arrival via the online e-Visa extension portal (up to 6 months) or at the Department of Immigration and Emigration head office in Battaramulla (up to 270 days from arrival: 60 days at the first extension, then 90 days twice). Free-ETA holders pay the normal visa fee for extensions.
  • Penalties. Our data does not list the overstay penalty for Sri Lanka. Ask the immigration authority before you risk it: fines, deportation and entry bans are common elsewhere.

Good to know

Official details are shown in English.

  • ETA fees paid before 25 May 2026 are not refunded.
  • The ETA FAQ states an ETA is not a pre-condition for boarding, but the Department of Immigration requires all foreigners to obtain one before arrival — do not rely on getting one on arrival.
