New Zealand visa for British citizens

ETA

ETA · 180 days

British citizens don't need a visa for New Zealand, but must get an electronic travel authorisation (ETA) online before the trip. Stays of up to 180 days are allowed. Most visitors need either an NZeTA or a visa before boarding. NZeTA travellers also pay the NZD 100 International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) at the same time.

What it means in practice

180 days is about six months. If you arrive on 1 November 2026, your last legal day is 29 April 2027, because the arrival day is day one. Use the stay calculator for your own dates.

That is long enough to rent a place for a season, but a visitor stay is not residence: it does not give you the right to work for a local employer.

How New Zealand counts your stay: NZeTA: up to 3 months per visit. Visitor visa: as granted.

Before you go

Official details are shown in English.

  • NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) — Cost: NZD 17 (app) / NZD 23 (web) + NZD 100 IVL; Processing: Up to 72 hours; Validity: 2 years, multiple trips; Stay: Up to 3 months per visit. Apply on the official site
  • NZeTA + IVL — At least 72 hours before travel; NZD 17 in the app or NZD 23 on the website, plus NZD 100 IVL per person. Apply only in the official NZeTA app or on the Immigration New Zealand website; third-party services are not authorised. You need a passport, a recent face photo (last 6 months, not edited or AI-generated), e-mail and a card. Processing can take up to 72 hours; without an NZeTA you may be denied boarding. Valid 2 years, multiple trips; not a visa and does not guarantee entry. The IVL is paid together with the NZeTA and is not refunded even if declined. Official site

How to avoid overstaying

  • Go by your stamp or visa. The date the officer gives you is the one that counts, even if it is shorter than the maximum.
  • Plan to leave a day or two early. With 180 days, book your exit before the last legal day so a cancelled flight doesn't push you over.
  • Extend before you run out. To stay longer, apply for a visitor visa online before your current stay ends.
  • Penalties. Our data does not list the overstay penalty for New Zealand. Ask the immigration authority before you risk it: fines, deportation and entry bans are common elsewhere.

Staying longer

Visa-free days are for visits. For months or years in New Zealand, these are the long-stay routes in Bordr's guide (checked against official sources):
