What it means in practice
365 days is about a year. If you arrive on 1 November 2026, your last legal day is 31 October 2027, because the arrival day is day one. Use the stay calculator for your own dates.
That is long enough to rent a place for a season, but a visitor stay is not residence: it does not give you the right to work for a local employer.
How Georgia counts your stay: Visa-free nationals: one full year from entry. Visa holders: per visa type (e.g. 30 days per visit or 90 days in any 180).
For United States passports: Visa-free for one year; mandatory insurance applies.
Before you go
Official details are shown in English.
- Mandatory health and accident insurance — Before departure; must be valid from the day you enter until the day you leave; Depends on insurer (Georgian or foreign company allowed). Required for tourists entering Georgia from 1 January 2026 under the Law of Georgia "On Tourism". Sum insured at least 30,000 GEL; the policy must cover the entire stay in Georgia, be on paper or electronic, in Georgian or English, and state the parties, territory, insured risks, limits and start/end dates. Border officers may ask for it and can refuse entry without it. Exemptions in the government rules cover, among others, diplomatic/official travellers; check if you travel on official business. At the border
Official details are shown in English.
- Proof of health and accident insurance covering the whole stay (min. 30,000 GEL); without it entry can be refused
- Visa holders: passport valid at least 3 months beyond the visa's end date
- Border police may ask for proof of accommodation, a return ticket and sufficient funds
- The final decision on entry is made by the border authorities
How to avoid overstaying
- Go by your stamp or visa. The date the officer gives you is the one that counts, even if it is shorter than the maximum.
- Plan to leave a day or two early. With 365 days, book your exit before the last legal day so a cancelled flight doesn't push you over.
- Extend before you run out. For longer stays apply for a residence permit (work, study, family, property, etc.) via Georgia's Public Service Hall / immigration authorities.
- Penalties. Our data does not list the overstay penalty for Georgia. Ask the immigration authority before you risk it: fines, deportation and entry bans are common elsewhere.
Staying longer
Visa-free days are for visits. For months or years in Georgia, these are the long-stay routes in Bordr's guide (checked against official sources):
Official details are shown in English.
- Work residence permit (employees and entrepreneurs) — Temporary, tied to the work permit
- IT residence permit — Temporary, renewable
- Short-term residence permit for property owners — Temporary, renewable while you own the property
- Investment residence permit — 5 years
- Study residence permit — Tied to the length of study
Costs, income thresholds and how to apply are in the Bordr guide.
