What it means in practice

180 days is about six months. If you arrive on 1 November 2026, your last legal day is 29 April 2027, because the arrival day is day one. Use the stay calculator for your own dates.

That is long enough to rent a place for a season, but a visitor stay is not residence: it does not give you the right to work for a local employer.

How the United Kingdom counts your stay: A visitor can stay up to 6 months per visit. Frequent or back-to-back visits can lead border officers to conclude you are living in the UK and refuse entry.

For United States passports: No visa, but an ETA (£20) is required before travel.

Before you go

Official details are shown in English.

  • Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) — Cost: £20; Processing: Usually within a day; up to 3 working days; Validity: 2 years or until the passport expires, multiple trips; Stay: Up to 6 months per visit. Apply on the official site
  • UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) — Before booking or at least 3 working days before travel; £20, non-refundable. Apply in the official UK ETA app or on GOV.UK; you need the passport you will travel with, an email address and a card or Apple/Google Pay. Every traveller needs one, including babies and children. A decision usually comes by email within a day, but can take up to 3 working days. The ETA is linked to your passport and lasts 2 years or until the passport expires, for unlimited trips. Also needed if you pass through UK border control when changing flights. Other websites charge more: use only GOV.UK or the official app. Official site

At the border

Official details are shown in English.

  • Valid passport; most EU, EEA and Swiss national ID cards are not accepted for entry
  • ETA or visa linked to the same passport you travel with
  • Border Force may ask about the purpose of the visit, where you will stay, your funds and your return or onward travel
  • British and Irish citizens need neither an ETA nor a visa

How to avoid overstaying

  • Go by your stamp or visa. The date the officer gives you is the one that counts, even if it is shorter than the maximum.
  • Plan to leave a day or two early. With 180 days, book your exit before the last legal day so a cancelled flight doesn't push you over.
  • Extend before you run out. Visitors can normally only extend in exceptional circumstances (for example medical treatment). For longer stays apply for the appropriate visa from outside the UK.
  • Penalties. Our data does not list the overstay penalty for the United Kingdom. Ask the immigration authority before you risk it: fines, deportation and entry bans are common elsewhere.

Staying longer

Visa-free days are for visits. For months or years in the United Kingdom, these are the long-stay routes in Bordr's guide (checked against official sources):
