Move to Nepal

Himalayan peaks, temple-filled valleys and a deeply spiritual daily rhythm

Nepal is cheap and easy to enter (visa on arrival for most nationalities), but tourist stays are capped at 150 days per calendar year. A five-year digital nomad visa was announced in the government's 2025 reform plan but has not launched yet; other long-term options are limited (residential visa for retirees, business, study).

Why people move

Kathmandu Valley is full of stupas, courtyards and old Newar towns, while lakeside Pokhara is the relaxed base for trekking. Dal bhat, momos and festivals fill the calendar, and the mountains are never far.

Day to day

Buses and short flights link cities, but roads are slow and winding. Private hospitals in Kathmandu cover routine care. Cash is still widely used. English works in tourism, and Nepali helps everywhere else.

Trade-offs

Kathmandu has heavy dust and air pollution. Power and water supply can be irregular, and monsoon landslides cut roads. The country sits in an active earthquake zone.

Before you move: visa-free entry

Most people arrive as visitors first, then apply from inside the country or come back with the right visa. How long you can stay as a visitor depends on your passport:
