What life is like
Programme details are shown in English.
Why people move
Taipei combines efficient city life with hot springs and hiking trails on its edges. Night markets, bubble tea and beef noodle soup are everyday staples, and the east coast and central mountains offer dramatic scenery.
Day to day
High-speed rail runs down the west coast and city metros are excellent. The national health system is efficient and affordable. Transit cards double as payment, though cash is still common. Mandarin is the main language; English is limited outside Taipei.
Trade-offs
Summers are hot and humid, with typhoons and earthquakes. Housing is often small and dated, and many services assume Mandarin.
Before you move: visa-free entry
Most people arrive as visitors first, then apply from inside the country or come back with the right visa. How long you can stay as a visitor depends on your passport:
