What it means in practice
90 days is about three months. If you arrive on 1 November 2026, your last legal day is 29 January 2027, because the arrival day is day one. Use the stay calculator for your own dates.
How Ecuador counts your stay: Tourists are allowed up to 90 days. With one extension the total is up to 180 days in the year counted from the first entry.
Before you go

- Galápagos Transit Control Card (TCT) (optional) — Online before your flight to the islands; Fee set by CGREG, paid online. Only if you go to the Galápagos. Issued by the Galápagos Special Regime Government Council (CGREG) and checked at the mainland airport before the flight. Have a return ticket and accommodation booking ready. Official site
At the border
Official details are shown in English.
- Passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry; otherwise entry can be refused
- Entering by land or river from Colombia or Peru: an apostilled criminal record certificate for the last 5 years from your country of origin or residence, or an online SIMIEC check showing no entry ban
- Galápagos: entry fee of USD 200 for foreign visitors over 12 (USD 100 under 12), paid on arrival at the islands' airport
How to avoid overstaying
- Go by your stamp or visa. The date the officer gives you is the one that counts, even if it is shorter than the maximum.
- Plan to leave a day or two early. With 90 days, book your exit before the last legal day so a cancelled flight doesn't push you over.
- Extend before you run out. Request a 90-day extension of stay (prórroga) from the Ministry of the Interior, online or in person, with your passport and the application form. It is granted once per year counted from the first entry and is not available to South American nationals who entered as tourists. For longer stays apply for a visa with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- Penalties. Our data does not list the overstay penalty for Ecuador. Ask the immigration authority before you risk it: fines, deportation and entry bans are common elsewhere.
