What it means in practice
90 days is about three months. If you arrive on 1 November 2026, your last legal day is 29 January 2027, because the arrival day is day one. Use the stay calculator for your own dates.
How Bhutan counts your stay: You may stay for the dates on your visa or permit, paying SDF for every night.
Before you go
Official details are shown in English.
- Bhutan tourist visa (online, issued on arrival) — Cost: USD 40 visa fee + SDF USD 100 per adult per night (USD 50 for children 6–11); Processing: Up to 5 working days; Validity: For the dates applied for and paid; Stay: The nights for which SDF is paid; can be extended online before expiry. Apply on the official site
- Bhutan visa (or permit) and Sustainable Development Fee — Before travel; applications are reviewed within 5 working days; Visa fee USD 40 (one-off, non-refundable) + SDF USD 100 per adult per night; USD 50 for children 6–11; under 6 free. Apply on the Department of Immigration portal or let a Bhutanese tour operator or hotel apply for you. You sign the Pledge of Friendship, upload a passport copy and a recent photo, give arrival and departure dates and pay the visa fee and SDF for the whole stay. The visa is pre-approved and stamped on arrival; check that the officer stamps it. Indian nationals need a permit instead of a visa and pay SDF of Nu. 1,200 (or INR) per night. Official site
- Book a certified guide (via a tour operator) — Before travel; Set by the tour operator. A certified guide must accompany you at all times, including if you self-drive. National park entry permits are applied for online; drones need a separate permit in advance. Official site
At the border

How to avoid overstaying
- Go by your stamp or visa. The date the officer gives you is the one that counts, even if it is shorter than the maximum.
- Plan to leave a day or two early. With 90 days, book your exit before the last legal day so a cancelled flight doesn't push you over.
- Extend before you run out. Extend online through the immigration portal before the visa or permit expires, paying SDF for the extra nights; it can also be requested at the Department of Immigration in Thimphu.
- Penalties. Our data does not list the overstay penalty for Bhutan. Ask the immigration authority before you risk it: fines, deportation and entry bans are common elsewhere.
