What it means in practice
90 days is about three months. If you arrive on 1 November 2026, your last legal day is 29 January 2027, because the arrival day is day one. Use the stay calculator for your own dates.
How Rwanda counts your stay: Visa on arrival: 30 days. Free visa: 30 days, 6 months or 90 days depending on nationality. East Africa Tourist Visa: 90 days across Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda.
Before you go
Official details are shown in English.
- Yellow fever certificate (if arriving from an endemic or outbreak country) (optional) — Get vaccinated at least 10 days before travel; Depends on the clinic; vaccination on arrival is at your own expense. Mandatory for residents and visitors arriving from yellow fever endemic countries or any country with an active outbreak. Without a certificate you are vaccinated on entry at your own cost; a certificate less than 10 days old is not yet valid and the traveller is quarantined until it is. Those who refuse these measures are not admitted. The list of countries is set by the Rwanda Biomedical Centre and can change at any time. Official site
At the border
Official details are shown in English.
- Passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry
- Visa fee (unless your visa is free or already paid online on Irembo)
- Yellow fever certificate if arriving from an endemic or outbreak country; otherwise vaccination on entry at your expense
How to avoid overstaying
- Go by your stamp or visa. The date the officer gives you is the one that counts, even if it is shorter than the maximum.
- Plan to leave a day or two early. With 90 days, book your exit before the last legal day so a cancelled flight doesn't push you over.
- Extend before you run out. Apply at a Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration office while your current visa is still valid.
- Penalties. Our data does not list the overstay penalty for Rwanda. Ask the immigration authority before you risk it: fines, deportation and entry bans are common elsewhere.
