What it means in practice

180 days is about six months. If you arrive on 1 November 2026, your last legal day is 29 April 2027, because the arrival day is day one. Use the stay calculator for your own dates.

That is long enough to rent a place for a season, but a visitor stay is not residence: it does not give you the right to work for a local employer.

How Mauritius counts your stay: The officer sets the length of stay on arrival. Tourist stays can total up to six months per calendar year; overstaying is an offence.

Before you go

Fill it in online on the government portal Safe Mauritius; third-party sites that charge for it are not official. Official site

At the border

Official details are shown in English.

  • Passport valid beyond your intended stay
  • Return ticket to your country of origin or residence
  • Confirmed hotel booking or sponsor's accommodation
  • Enough funds for the stay
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate if you are 1 year or older and arrive from a yellow fever risk country, or spent more than 12 hours in transit at an airport there; it becomes valid 10 days after vaccination
  • Foreign nationals who have been in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda or South Sudan in the last 21 days are temporarily barred from entry

How to avoid overstaying

  • Go by your stamp or visa. The date the officer gives you is the one that counts, even if it is shorter than the maximum.
  • Plan to leave a day or two early. With 180 days, book your exit before the last legal day so a cancelled flight doesn't push you over.
  • Extend before you run out. Free. Apply in person at the Passport and Immigration Office, Sterling House, Port Louis, with the signed form, copies of the passport photo page and entry stamp, ticket reservation, bank statements for the last 3 months and confirmed accommodation.
  • What overstaying costs. Tourist stays can total up to six months per calendar year; overstaying is an offence.
