What it means in practice

180 days is about six months. If you arrive on 1 November 2026, your last legal day is 29 April 2027, because the arrival day is day one. Use the stay calculator for your own dates.

That is long enough to rent a place for a season, but a visitor stay is not residence: it does not give you the right to work for a local employer.

How Hong Kong counts your stay: Your limit of stay is printed on the landing slip given at immigration; keep it.

For United Kingdom passports: British citizens: up to 180 days; other British nationality categories: 90 days.

At the border

  • Valid passport and, where needed, a visa or Pre-arrival Registration
  • Officers may ask for a return or onward ticket and proof of enough funds

How to avoid overstaying

  • Go by your stamp or visa. The date the officer gives you is the one that counts, even if it is shorter than the maximum.
  • Plan to leave a day or two early. With 180 days, book your exit before the last legal day so a cancelled flight doesn't push you over.
  • Extend before you run out. Only for special or urgent needs: apply online to the Immigration Department while in Hong Kong when 14 days or less of your stay remain. Fee HK$330 if approved (from 8 September 2025); approval is not guaranteed, and you cannot apply after your stay has expired.
  • Penalties. Our data does not list the overstay penalty for Hong Kong. Ask the immigration authority before you risk it: fines, deportation and entry bans are common elsewhere.
