What it means in practice
180 days is about six months. If you arrive on 1 November 2026, your last legal day is 29 April 2027, because the arrival day is day one. Use the stay calculator for your own dates.
That is long enough to rent a place for a season, but a visitor stay is not residence: it does not give you the right to work for a local employer.
How Jamaica counts your stay: The departure date is stamped in your passport on arrival. Overstaying is an offence that can lead to fines, arrest or deportation.
For United States passports: No visa required, up to 6 months.
Before you go
Official details are shown in English.
- Electronic Immigration/Customs C5 form — Before arrival, up to 30 days ahead; Free on the official website. Run jointly by PICA (immigration) and Jamaica Customs. You enter passport, trip and customs details; family members travelling with you can be added. With the confirmation you go straight to the kiosk on landing, scan your passport, get a receipt and pass the gates. If you did not file it in advance, you can complete it at the airport (Wi-Fi, PICA tablets, staff help) or on a paper card. Keep the confirmation until departure. Official site
At the border

- Passport valid for the whole stay, with 2 blank pages for stamps
- Return or onward ticket and proof you can pay for your stay may be requested
- C5 confirmation (online form) or a completed paper card
- Declare cash or travellers' cheques of USD 10,000 or more on the C5; a Financial Investigation Division form and proof of the money's source are also required

How to avoid overstaying
- Go by your stamp or visa. The date the officer gives you is the one that counts, even if it is shorter than the maximum.
- Plan to leave a day or two early. With 180 days, book your exit before the last legal day so a cancelled flight doesn't push you over.
- Extend before you run out. Apply in person at a PICA office (Kingston, Montego Bay, St Ann's Bay, Port Antonio, Mandeville or the airports) before your stamp expires, with your passport (valid 6+ months), return ticket and a letter explaining why. Fee JMD 10,000; JMD 50,000 for an extension beyond the visa-exemption period. Processed in about 3 working days. Visitors can stay at most 6 months in total (12 months for Commonwealth citizens).
- What overstaying costs. Overstaying is an offence that can lead to fines, arrest or deportation.
Good to know
Official details are shown in English.
- After Hurricane Melissa some western communities still lack power and piped water, and healthcare is limited in the worst-hit areas.
- Gang violence is concentrated in parts of Kingston, Spanish Town, Savanna-la-Mar and some Montego Bay neighbourhoods (Flankers, Barrett Town, Glendevon, Rose Heights, Mount Salem); tourist areas are usually not affected. States of emergency with curfews can be declared at short notice.
