What it means in practice
90 days is about three months. If you arrive on 1 November 2026, your last legal day is 29 January 2027, because the arrival day is day one. Use the stay calculator for your own dates.
Days in Colombia also add up over time: 180 days per calendar year. Leaving and coming back does not reset that total, so earlier stays count. The stay calculator checks both limits when you add your earlier trips.
How Colombia counts your stay: No foreigner may stay more than 180 days, continuous or not, in a calendar year (1 January–31 December) on a PIP plus extension. Leaving and re-entering does not reset the count.
Before you go
Official details are shown in English.
- Check-MIG pre-registration — From 72 hours up to 1 hour before the flight, for both arrival and departure; Free on the official Migración Colombia site. Must be completed before you reach the migration control post when flying in or out. Not needed when crossing at a land border. A confirmation e-mail is sent; if it does not arrive, look up your registration on the same portal. Airlines usually ask for it at check-in. Official site
- Return or onward ticket — Before departure; —. Tourists must hold a ticket out of Colombia; airlines and migration officers can ask for it. Official site
At the border
Official details are shown in English.
- Valid passport
- Check-MIG completed (air travel)
- Return or onward ticket
- Cash or financial instruments over USD 10,000 must be declared
- Drones need an advance import declaration and may only enter via El Dorado airport (Bogotá) or the Cartagena cruise port
How to avoid overstaying
- Go by your stamp or visa. The date the officer gives you is the one that counts, even if it is shorter than the maximum.
- Plan to leave a day or two early. With 90 days, book your exit before the last legal day so a cancelled flight doesn't push you over.
- Extend before you run out. Apply online for a Temporary Stay Permit (PTP) at Migración Colombia, no earlier than 5 business days before your PIP expires. Fee COP 150,000 in 2026 (free for EU and Ecuadorian citizens); processing about 3 business days. Not available for cruise transit groups.
- Keep a record of every entry and exit. The period limit adds up all your stays, and border officers can see them.
- Penalties. Our data does not list the overstay penalty for Colombia. Ask the immigration authority before you risk it: fines, deportation and entry bans are common elsewhere.
