What it means in practice
90 days is about three months. If you arrive on 1 November 2026, your last legal day is 29 January 2027, because the arrival day is day one. Use the stay calculator for your own dates.
How Vietnam counts your stay: Visa-exempt visitors get a temporary stay certificate on entry: 45 days for countries exempted unilaterally (Resolutions 44/NQ-CP and 229/NQ-CP), the treaty period for bilateral exemptions (30 days if the treaty sets none). E-visa holders may stay within the visa validity (up to 90 days).

At the border
Official details are shown in English.
- Passport valid for at least 6 months
- Valid visa or visa exemption; e-visa holders must use a border gate designated for e-visas
- You must not be subject to an entry ban
How to avoid overstaying
- Go by your stamp or visa. The date the officer gives you is the one that counts, even if it is shorter than the maximum.
- Plan to leave a day or two early. With 90 days, book your exit before the last legal day so a cancelled flight doesn't push you over.
- Extend before you run out. Extension of temporary stay is handled by the Immigration Department; state fee US$10 per extension (Circular 28/2026/TT-BTC, from 1 April 2026).
- Penalties. Our data does not list the overstay penalty for Vietnam. Ask the immigration authority before you risk it: fines, deportation and entry bans are common elsewhere.
