Visa on arrival · 30 days

Canadian citizens need a visa for Malawi, but can get it on arrival, for stays of up to 30 days. Since 3 January 2026 Malawi has scrapped its broad visa waiver: most visitors again need a visa, via e-visa or on arrival. Everyone completes the Traveller Health Check form.

What it means in practice

30 days is about a month. If you arrive on 1 November 2026, your last legal day is 30 November 2026, because the arrival day is day one. Use the stay calculator for your own dates.

For a longer base you need an extension, if one exists, or a different visa from the start. Repeated back-to-back entries are at the officer's discretion.

How Malawi counts your stay: Usually 30 days on entry; a visa allows up to 3 months in total.

Before you go

Official details are shown in English.

  • Visa on arrival — Cost: Same fees as the e-visa, in US dollars cash; Stay: 30 days on entry, extendable to 3 months. Apply on the official site
  • Malawi e-visa — Before travel (optional where a visa on arrival is available); Single entry USD 50–75 (amount shown on the portal); multiple entry USD 150 (6 months) or USD 250 (12 months); Visa/Mastercard only, non-refundable. Create an account on the portal, upload a passport-size photo and passport page (plus invitation letter and host documents if you have a host; minors need a birth certificate, parent's passport copy and consent). The e-visa arrives as a PDF by email: print it. Official site
  • Traveller Health Check form — In advance online, or on arrival via QR code; Free. Mandatory for all arriving passengers. Official site

At the border

Official details are shown in English.

  • Passport valid at least 6 months after arrival
  • Printed e-visa, or US dollars cash for a visa on arrival
  • Yellow fever certificate if arriving from a country with yellow fever risk
  • Declare foreign cash on arrival and keep the receipt

How to avoid overstaying

  • Go by your stamp or visa. The date the officer gives you is the one that counts, even if it is shorter than the maximum.
  • Plan to leave a day or two early. With 30 days, book your exit before the last legal day so a cancelled flight doesn't push you over.
  • Extend before you run out. Report to an immigration office within the first 30 days to extend up to 3 months.
  • Penalties. Our data does not list the overstay penalty for Malawi. Ask the immigration authority before you risk it: fines, deportation and entry bans are common elsewhere.

  • Holding more than USD 1,000 in cash, or taking it out of Malawi without proof of purchase from an authorised dealer, needs Reserve Bank of Malawi permission.
