What it means in practice
Apply well before the trip: visa processing for Algeria depends on the embassy or consulate handling your application. The length of stay is the one printed on your visa.
How Algeria counts your stay: As stated on the visa.
Before you go
Official details are shown in English.
- Algerian visa (consulate) — Cost: Set by the consulate; Processing: Depends on the consulate; Validity: Depends on visa type; Stay: As stated on the visa; the Grand Sud visa on arrival is up to 30 days.
- Visa from an Algerian consulate — Before travel, at the consulate covering your place of residence; Set by the consulate. Choose the visa type that matches the trip (tourist, family, business, work, study, transit). Business visas need an employer's mission letter or a partner's invitation plus a hotel booking or host's certificate. Journalists need a dedicated accreditation visa; bloggers and influencers who plan to post content are advised to tell the consulate when applying.
- Visa on arrival for organised trips to the Grand Sud (optional) — Booked through the agency before travel; Visa fee paid on arrival. Only for group trips organised by an approved Algerian travel agency whose itinerary includes at least one of the listed southern provinces. The agency sends an authorisation with a QR code; the visa (up to 30 days) is issued at certain airports on arrival. An Algerian consulate can give the list of approved agencies. Official site
- Yellow fever vaccination certificate — Before departure, if you arrive from a country with yellow fever risk; Cost of the vaccination at a certified centre. Required for travellers aged 9 months and over arriving from a country with yellow fever risk, including after a transit of more than 12 hours in such a country. Not needed when arriving directly from a country without risk.

- Go by your stamp or visa. The date the officer gives you is the one that counts, even if it is shorter than the maximum.
- Extend before you run out. Apply at the local wilaya (provincial administration) before the visa expires.
- Penalties. Our data does not list the overstay penalty for Algeria. Ask the immigration authority before you risk it: fines, deportation and entry bans are common elsewhere.
